Duration: 6 minutes
Winner Of the 2011 Minnesota Sinfonia Junior Composers Competition
Program Note:
Jest is based on two themes, the first is a witty, rhythmic snippet, and the second is an innocent, sweet melody. These themes together create a lighthearted, whimsical mood that in itself is a jest: a playful attitude. After the themes are presented, they begin to mix and intermingle. Their interactions develop through the reordering of their fragments to create new musical dialogue as the piece nears a jostling, frenzied ending. Jest was composed during the spring of 2011 for the Junior Composer’s workshop, New Symphonies. It was then revised in the spring of 2012 for performances by the Minnesota Sinfonia.
