Elegy (2019)
Instrumentation: violin, cello, piano
Duration: 10 minutes
Duration: 10 minutes
Program Note:
Unlike much of my work, Elegy is not inspired by dance or kinesthetic sensations, nor is it inspired by vivid visual imaginations. It is a work grounded only in emotion. Yet, it never began this way. The initial idea was to depict an imaginary, romantic dialogue between two entities, respectively characterizing the sound qualities of pitch and noise, but this fell apart. Coming back to the piece months later, it focused on the fragility of mental health, depression and their consequences. But this too didn’t last. In the end, Elegy is simply about sorrow.
