Rhapsodie (2014)
Instrumentation: flute solo
Duration: 11 minutes
Duration: 11 minutes
Program Note:
Through a collage of bright passages, Rhapsodie portrays the arrival of spring. Dance-like motifs swirl around each other beckoning the birth of energetic life, and tranquil melodies provide reflection on the scenic beauty of spring. In these latter moments, large intervallic leaps generate soaring lines that ultimately find themselves frequently interrupted by sneaky gestures. The greatest of the interruptions, a feisty cadenza, sparks the finale of Rhapsodie: a series of themes that scamper, sprint, slither, and tumble to culminate in one final, decisive gesture. Despite its aesthetic aims, Rhapsodie was composed in the winter of 2014 for flautist Victoria Calderone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
